Historical Finishes For Both Men’s and Women’s Races at the 22nd Annual Armed Forces Cycling Classic

Eric Young and Kendall Ryan Win Back-to-Back Races and Overall Omnium

Arlington, Va. (June 5, 2019) – For the first time in the history of the Armed Forces Cycling Classic both men’s and women’s races were won by the same person each day. Eric Young of Elevate-KHS and Kendall Ryan of Team Tibco-Silicon Valley Bank won both races and took home the Omnium championship.

Kendall Ryan of Team Tibco-Silicon Valley Bank returned to the Crystal Cup as the defending champion and had an impressive finish. While both the Fearless Femme p/b Altamira and Hagens Berman Supermint Pro Cycling teams seemed to control the field most of the race, it was Ryan’s sprint that won her the race by about three bike lengths during the Crystal Cup.

Hugo Scala Jr. of Gateway Harley Davidson initiated a break that stuck for Eric Young and Ulises Alfredo Castillo Soto of Elevate-KHS. Young won the Crystal Cup with his teammate in close second and a massive lead over the field with Scala Jr. placing third and Elevate-KHS placed fourth and fifth in the field sprint.

Sunday’s Clarendon Cup was much more aggressive for both the men’s and women’s races. Fearless Femme p/b Altamira and Hagens Berman Supermint drove the pace and controlled the field for most of the day once again. Rachel Langdon of Fast Chance p/b Happy Tooth tried to rip apart the field in a breakaway and ultimately took home the Most Heroic Jersey. After Langdon was caught by the field, Kendall Ryan once again sprinted for win number two.

The Elevate-KHS team also dominated the field on Sunday along with Legion of Los Angeles. A five-person break was initiated with just under 40 laps to go that stuck and the group eventually lapped the field. With everyone back together it made for an exciting sprint finish with Elevate-KHS’ Eric Young edging out Sean McElroy of Legion of Los Angeles for the win.
