UNITEDHEALTHCARE DOMINATES AFCC MEN’S PRO RACE IN CLARENDON

Arlington, Va. – The 2017 Clarendon Cup, known as 'The Race of 500 Corners' among pro cyclists due to its tight, challenging course, was once again dominated by UnitedHealthCare, demonstrating why the team is a perennial favorite at the Air Force Cycling Classic.

Thirty laps into the one hundred 1km laps of the race, UnitedHealthCare’s Carlos Alzate had managed to breakaway from the peloton and he rejoined the pack only a few laps later. He had no trouble holding on to first place for the rest of the race, supported by his team at the front of the lead group all day. Alzate, a pro since 2005, finished second in the 2016 and 2011 Clarendon Cup.

The battle for second and third place was contentious, with riders taking and leaving the lead throughout the final half of the race. In another photo finish, Holowekso | Citadel p/b Hincapie Sportswear’s John Murphy took second place and Altamira p/b Team Skyline’s Adam Myerson took third.

With fifteen laps to go, CCB Velotooler Cycling Team’s John Harris was off the front, setting the pace for an already ambitious breakaway. Harris was not able to maintain his lead and secure a podium spot, but he did earn the Most Heroic Rider Award in this year’s Men’s Pro/Cat 1 race. Look for him in tomorrow’s Crystal City race in the Most Heroic Rider jersey.

The Armed Forces Cycling Classic’s Clarendon Cup is part of USA Cycling’s Pro Road Tour (formerly the National Criterium Calendar), and has been the Washington DC region’s premier Pro/Am race since 1998. The weekend-long event showcases high energy, spectator-friendly bike races that take place on a 1km course on city streets. The Clarendon Cup is known as one of the most difficult criterium races in the US due to the technical demands of the course as well as the quality of the participants.

ROUTE CHANGE FOR 2017 EVENT

Construction on Bridge Primary Reason for Route Adjustment

Arlington, Va. – The Armed Forces Cycling Classic, presented by The Boeing Company, will adjust the route of the originally intended course because of the on-going construction of the Washington Boulevard Bridge over RTE 110.

The new route will offer cyclists access to the full width of RTE 110 in both the north and south bound directions. This revision will eliminate any need to use cones on the course for directional purposes, as well as the sharp U-turn coming back out onto RTE 110 south bound. The construction on the bridge will only accommodate one lane of cyclists through a very narrow section, with concrete wall barriers lining both sides immediately before the off-ramp on the 110. The organizers feel that this configuration is not suitable to be a part of the Challenge ride.

Because the course will be shorter, riders will have to complete more laps to receive their gold medal. Nine laps will be required rather than 6 for gold. Six to eight laps will earn silver, and 5 or fewer will earn a bronze.
